Stains and pigments are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from small quantity uses in ceramic hobby art, to large-volume uses in the production of ceramic tile and in the plastics industry for coloring a wide range of products. All customers, even the large volume ones, receive these products in small packaging. The pigment manufacturing facility at Cerdec's plant in Washington, Pa. produces hundreds of metric tons of pigments each year. This pigment making process requires raw material batching and mixing, calcining, crushing, milling, blending and packaging. Most of the powdered raw materials for the operation are received in small paper bags that must be manually cut open and dumped into mixer feed bins in predetermined quantities.
