The good news for farmers is there is a bright future for renewable fuels in Ontario. The not-so-good news for corn and soybean producers is the industry isn't ready to provide a short-term, large-scale market for their crops. Yet. Ethanol-blended fuels have been sold since 1985 but they've suffered a lot of resistance, explains Bob Peden, director of the Central Ontario Energy Alliance, adding they are now more widely accepted. All modern engines are capable of using up to an E10 (10 per cent) blended fuel. Ethanol blended fuels can actually help to clean up the fuel and storage systems in a vehicle resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and ethanol acts as a built-in gas line antifreeze.
