Gene Stevens appreciates the irony of his latest research project. He's growing tobacco, a crop whose products are associated with disease, but this particular variety may instead produce a cancer cure. Since 2003, the University of Missouri researcher has worked with Chlorogen Inc., a St. Louis-based biotechnology company, to refine an agronomic production system for growing pharmaceutical tobacco.
