CTRF examining pearl millet production issues: Pearl millet - it's not just for nematode suppression anymore

The Canadian Tobacco Research Foundation has turned its expertise toward improving knowledge of issues related to pearl millet production in light of increased interest in using the crop not only for root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans) suppression in tobacco but also for use producing ethanol. For the past few years, CTRF has been planting plots of millet on rented land at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Delhi Research Station as part of its work examining the crop's root-lesion nematode-fighting abilities, which eliminate the need for expensive soil fumigation. In 2005, plots were also established to investigate various production issues attached to the millet and the resulting tobacco crop that may follow in rotation.
