OFCTGMB chairman says more work is needed to stabilize tobacco industry

"We have bought ourselves some time." That was the message from Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers' Marketing Board (OFCTGMB) chairman Fred Neukamm as he discussed the role the Tobacco Adjustment Assistance Program (TAAP) has had on the future of theindustry. "The TAAP program was significant, but without concrete next steps, it will not stand the test of time," he said during his address to growers at the recent OFCTGMB annual meeting. "Time continues to march on. We - governments, the manufacturers and growers - have a window of opportunity to put a long-term fix in place for Ontario tobacco producers. We cannot afford delay or half-measures. It's time to solve this issue once and for all."
