TEIESCOPIC OBSERVATION of the planets is exciting and fun. Jupiter in particular is bright, easy to spot, and readily avails itself to detailed observation (July issue, page 62). But in the age of spacecraft missions to the planets, can the serious amateur astronomer still make meaningful scientific contributions to the study of the largest planet in the solar system.
