Currently, Russian metallurgical enterprises operate under exceptional pressure, in an unstable iron-ore and coking-coal market. In a market economy, scientifically based selection of raw-materials suppliers for sinter and iron production is very important, along with the determination of optimal batch composition and selection of rational blast-furnace conditions. Many blast furnaces at the largest metallurgical enterprises employ both imported and local iron ore. The chemical composition of the imported materials (for example, pellets) is not subject to control, as a rule, and their basic consumption is determined by purchasing decisions. The properties of the iron-ore batch are regulated by selecting local sinter. This entails the selection of raw-materials suppliers for both the sintering plant and for the blast furnaces; the optimal composition of the local sinter must be determined.
