Alternative methods for coke production are developed, and the smelting of chromium and manganese alloys using Ekibastuz and Karaganda high-ash coal, which is more reactive and less expensive than coke, is considered. The effectiveness of the carbon-based reducing agents is found to be largely determined by the influence of the coal's mineral composition on slag formation.
