In the rail and beam shop at Nizhnetagil'sk Metallurgical Works (NMW), a new walking-beam continuous furnace (Fig. 1) ensuring high-quality billet heating has been introduced. The furnace was developed by Stal'proekt Joint Stock Company, and the control system by LOI Termoprozess (Germany). In controlling the temperature, the furnace productivity is taken as the basis, and the temperature in the furnace zones as its consequence. The temperature at each point of the furnace working space is constant here. Furnace operation is controlled by means of a computer. The furnace may operate under automatic, semiautomatic, or manual control. In automatic operation, the furnace must ensure the complete billet-heating cycle. When the billet is supplied on the intake roller, it is recorded by the computer and then automatically sent to the supply window, positioned, sent to the furnace, transported, and removed from the furnace.
