Global Harmonization of Air-Conditioning Standards and Certification

Over the last 30 years, many countries have developed testing and rating standards for residential air conditioners. The purpose of this article is to give a brief history of the standards development for air conditioning, provide a summary of the current standards and identify the reference standard on which a country's standard is based, and discuss some of the recent ongoing efforts to harmonize air-conditioning standards and certification around the world. While this article focuses on selective air-conditioning standards and harmonization efforts, Table 1 provides a more complete synopsis of the worldwide testing and rating standards for air conditioners.
