DOC/NAM Standards Seminar

"The Voluntary Standards System: A Dynamic Tool for US Economic Growth and Innovation" was the topic of a half-day seminar organized by the US Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) that took place in Washington, DC on July 24, 2009. The seminar was the first in a periodic series of information meetings of the Commerce Department on key topics related to US competitiveness, technology deployment, and innovation. Panelists from industry and government discussed key features of the US standards system, both in general and as they relate to crucial areas of technology such as Smart Grid, healthcare IT, andcybersecurity. Introductory remarks were given by Mary Saunders, Acting Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services at ITA. Laura Hitchcock, Director, External Standards at The Boeing Company gave an excellent keynote address, reproduced below.
