Without accurate data regarding marketable inventories of fresh-market potatoes available regionally and nationally and a clear look of upcoming supplies from the non-storage areas, potato growers and their sales agencies are left in the dark regarding setting a coherent and profitable plan to bring a grower's product to market. If a grower believes there are more potatoes in storage than there really are, potatoes are sold at unnecessarily low prices throughout most of the season, followed by a demand-killing run-up in prices at season's end.
