In "Steel: From Mine to Mill, the Metal that Made America," Brooke Stoddard has done an excellent job of weaving together the history of steelmaking, especially in the U.S. He also gives some great insights into the people who made it all happen, and the trial and error nature of advances. He initially wrote the bulk of the book in the early 1980s. It was not until 2015 that Stoddard found a publisher. That long lag is unfortunate, as I would have very much enjoyed reading this book when I started in the industry in the 1980s.
