Standards Help Preserve Historic Documents for the Digital Future

In September 2009, a team of scientists crossed the Sinai Desert with its harsh climate and granite dust to Saint Catherine's Monastery, a holy shrine and refuge located there since 527 A.D. Led by Mike Toth, President of R.B. Toth Associates, the team-known as "The Five" by the Bedouin-carried state of the art equipment developed for earth resource and space applications, but their work was strictly terrestrial. In the spirit of Raiders a/the Lost Ark and National Treasure, "The Five" spent two weeks applying cutting edge technologies to the examination and analysis of some of the most prized artifAbouacts in one of the greatest (and most inaccessible) collections of ancient manuscripts in the world: The Library of St. Catherine's Monastery.
