What might future potato production look like? How about potatoes grown in beds and watered with drip irrigation? That's a system envisioned by University of Idaho researchers Bryan Hopkins, Jason Ellsworth, Howard Neibling and Jeff Miller, working with Gaylin Davies (Clearwater Supply, Othello, Wash.) and Kevin Stewart (T-Tape, San Diego, Calif.). Hopkins' expertise is in cropping systems and nutrient management, Neibling is an irrigation specialist, Ellsworth a soil fertility specialist and Millera plant pathologist. When they put their heads together, that system makes sense for reasons related to efficient nutrient and water use, better sunlight capture and disease management.
