There were 2,557 acres of potato seed certified in Oregon in 2011; a slight increase over pervious years. Klamath County in southern Oregon and Union County in northeast Oregon each produced about 1,000 acres of quality seed. Four hundred acres of seed were produced in Jefferson County in central Oregon, with Malheur County producing 105 acres in the very isolated Cow Valley of eastern Oregon. Planting in many regions was late this year due to the cool, wet spring conditions. Severe hail was experienced in northeastern Oregon, resulting in concerns about tuber sizes and yields. There also was excessive heatin early September that, in some cases, slowed down harvest. Despite these production concerns, quality was excellent and disease levels observed, including mosaic, were low for the most part.
