Restructuring traditional engineering programs

Regarding the January SME Speaks column, "Where have all the engineers gone?" (p. 37), I have some solutions. Each firm or agency should analyze monthly the jobs engineers are assigned to see if the task could be done by a less qualified person, for example, assigning an engineer to program jobs that could be executed by a liberal arts graduate with a knack for C++. I find it interesting that most of the top 100 inventions of the past 200 years weren't developed by engineers. Thomas Edison was originally a telegraph operator; Samuel F.B. Morse an obscure artist; Albert Einstein a patent clerk; and Steve Jobs a college dropout.
