Recent years have seen ceramics opening up completely new fields and probing possibilities that were unthinkable just a few decades ago. Researchers are pushing into new dimensions (nanoengineering, microstructures), exploring "exotic" systems, measuring new properties within these systems (superconductors) and making new landmark discoveries, such as carbon nanotubes. And suddenly ceramic - since time immemorial produced from inorganic raw material - is being produced from organic matter (polymer ceramics). And those are just a few of the revolutionary innovations. Many ceramists have come across these things in technical publications or at conferences, but their knowledge often just scratches the surface. In a sporadic series of articles, we hope to provide our readers with a deeper, practice-oriented insight into this new field.
