Is the Guard Trained or Not? The Attempt to Legislate Security Guard Training in Michigan

Michigan is one of only ten US states that fail to have a formal law regulating training standards for security officers. Possibly as a result of this inadequacy, three deadly altercations and one assault occurred between security officers and the general public in Michigan. As a result of these incidents, a legislative effort was initiated to create such security training laws. This study reviews the current security training laws in Michigan and other US states, the attempt in the Michigan legislature to create a security guard training law, the conclusions from this attempt, and observations on this process and the security environment.
