Chippers face difficulties with high potato prices. While growers are celebrating high potato prices, processors are making tough decisions about buying expensive open-market potatoes or advertising during peak sales months. With the economy slipping,consumers are eating at home more often, which should be a good thing for snack manufacturers. But consumers also are looking at labels and prices and looking for value in their purchases, Mike Schena, president of Better Made Potato Chips in Detroit, told growers and other industry members at the Michigan Potato Industry Commission's annual meeting in Mount Pleasant Feb. 10-11.
