Several companies have released new insecticides, with several more coming in the next few months, to aid potato growers on the front lines of pest management.Marrone Bio Innovations will release a new bioinsecticide, Venerate, in the first quarter of 2014. Venerate has contact and oral toxicity and targets chewing and sucking insects, as well as armyworms, artichoke plume moth, European corn borer, loopers and psyllids. Its mode of action (MOA) uses heat-killed burkholderia bacteria strain A396 cells and spent fermentation media. It will be available in a liquid formulation that can be used in a foliar application, but also can also be soil-drenched, soaked-in and applied through chemigation and in-furrow applications.Venerate is non-toxic to humans and other insect species.
