One of the most exciting new areas of development in arthroscopy and sports medicine is the role increasingly played by biomaterials. This trend began with the incorporation of biodegradable polymers used for ACL interference fixation screws and suture anchors and has expanded to include tissue engineering and repair.. Within the field of ligament fixation, interference screws have progressed from metal, to slowly absorbing biodegradable polymers that required many years to degrade, to biocomposites that offer a more rapid degradation profile and the potential to be replaced by bone. Areas of development reviewed in this issue include the use of bioactive materials and growth factors that have the potential to enhance the healing of degenerative tendons and articular cartilage
