In his series of articles on the possibilities and impossibilities of stainless steel with regard to chemical resistance and the corrosion mechanism, Jan Heselmans continues by looking at the role of chlorides in the corrosion process. The disinfectants chlorine gas and sodium hypochlorite can both increase or decrease the corrosivity of water. This article describes the role of chloride, chlorine and hypochlorite in the performance of stainless steels. Further ways how to improve materials are discussed.
