Pollen has been treated with zirconium, titanium and silicon alkoxides deposited via chemical vapor deposition in order to prepare ceramic nanomaterials that mimic the parent biological structure. The oxides overcoats were equivalent to 3-5 At.% Zr, Si or Ti. The alkoxide-treated samples were gasified in air at 873 K and their morphology was then assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The oxide overcoats changed the ease of gasification of the pollen.
