There have been no significant changes in market conditions in the US. Stainless bar consumption for calendar 2009 is forecast to be down by 25 percent, year-on-year. A recovery is predicted in 2010. Activity slowed in the second half of October as buyers were reluctant to pay the higher alloy surcharge and waited to take advantage of the lower figures in November. Service centres are carrying very little inventory and are unwilling to restock as they can easily and quickly source material from the mill depots and master distributors. In Japan, the market price for drawn bar has risen by around 30,000 RMB per tonne.
