Japanese consumption of stainless steel scrap (external and revert scrap) fell to 177,900 tonnes in the final quarter of last year, 33.1 percent down on the previous quarter. Exports of stainless steel scrap also fell sharply, by 32.9 percent to 43,800 tonnes, while imports declined by 6.6 percent to 34,000 tonnes. Consumption of scrap for the full year 2008 at 988,500 tonnes, was down 14.1 percent, with consumption of external scrap down 18 percent (739,700 tonnes), and consumption of revert scrap down 0.3 percent (248,700 tonnes). Japanese exports of stainless steel scrap increased in 2008, by 22.7 percent to 269,500 tonnes, while imports of scrap were down 23.4 percent at 138,100 tonnes.
