EU imports and exports of stainless steel scrap fell sharply in the final quarter of last year. Imports fell 26.7% compared to the previous quarter, and full year imports were down 20.6% compared to 2007. Russia, the United States and Switzerland were the main sources of supply, accounting for 30%, 17.9%, and 8.2%, respectively, of the total volume imported. Quarter four EU scrap exports fell 37.3% compared to the previous quarter, and full year exports were down 19.8%. Exports to Taiwan accounted for 54% of the total export volume, and exports to that country were up 23.9%, compared to the previous year, with most other countries seeing a decline in volumes.
