Cockerill Sambre to install 12m euros prototype vacuum coating line

Cockerill Sambre, an Arcelor subsidiary, is to spend 12m euros on constructing a prototype of a vacuum galvanising line to investigate applying coatings of new metal types to strip steel. The prototype to be installed at Ramet near Liege in Belgium, will be the culmination of "large sums of money" and 10 years of work and by Cockerill Sambre's R&D centre and its partners. The line will test the industrial viability of technology that until now has been demonstrated on a small pilot unit. It will take another two years to be fully operational, a Cockerill Sambre spokesman told SteelWEEK. By the time it is finished it should have a capacity of between 10,000-30,000t/y.
