CONCILIATORY moves are underway to avert the so-called steel wars breaking out into a full-scale Transatlantic trade conflict between the EU and US. Officials from both sides are in talks on a "compensation package which could impact on a number of areas," an EU official told SteelWEEK. It is impossible to say when the discussions would be concluded, he said. The talks came after the European Commission late last week published a list of US products which would be subjected to 100 percent tariffs from 18 June if Washington did not drop the S201 safeguards on steel imports (SW 8 March 2002).
