It took approximately three days after the initial announcement concerning the current outbreak of the Swine Flu (H1N1) in April before I received a bevy of press releases concerning the expected pandemic. Health care marketers lined up to issue releases concerning the availability of antiviral drugs, hand soaps and sanitizers, bleach and face masks. Companies who have been suffering from the current economic downturn may stand to benefit from increased sales of items that help prevent and treat what, as we go to press, may still yet become a global pandemic. These items can be produced for a low cost and marketed at a high margin. Interestingly, major drug chains in the U.S. almost immediately saw stock prices rise after the outbreak was announced.
