This special issue of Statistical Modelling is devoted to interval censoring, a particular censoring scheme, that although not as frequent as right censoring is encountered nowadays in many applications, from clinical trials and epidemiological studies to actuarial and demographical problems to other disciplines such as Food and Veterinary Sciences. Interval-censoring patterns appear when the event of interest cannot be observed and it is only known to have occurred within a time interval. In the last 35 years, more than 600 papers including reviews and tutorials have been published based on this subject. Our aim for this special volume was to present, on one hand, the basis of interval-censored data from a methodological point of view jointly with the necessary software tools and, on the other hand, new methodological advances in this area.
