Spain's Acerinox has reported that in the first quarter of 2005, the stainless steel market was driven by a continued strengthening of raw material prices, mainly nickel, and by weaker demand in Europe than in 2004. Despite this unfavourable scenario, Acerinox said, production at Acerinox group mills at 599,000 tonnes, was 21.4 percent up on the first quarter of 2004. Cold rolled production at 379,000 tonnes, was up 37 percent. Acerinox SA increased its melting production by 34.7 percent to 226,000 tonnes, with cold rolled production up 50.5 percent at 156,000 tonnes. Net sales at Euro 466m, were 34 percent up on the 2004 period, and the result after taxes up 29 percent at Euro25.1m. North American Stainless continues to increase output in all shops, as well as increasing its market share in North America. Melting shop production at 197,000 tonnes, was up 25.2 percent, compared to the same period of last year, and cold rolled output up 35.4 percent at 136,000 tonnes. Net sales in the first quarter at 540m US dollars, were up 50.7 percent, and the result after taxes up 93.8 percent at 49.6m dollars.
