IMPLEMENTATION OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ISO 9001: 2000) IN HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES

Health is the basic need of all human beings. Hospitals and Nursing homes provide this basic need for the needy people. The national health policy has laid the guidelines towards integrated approach to developing and strengthening national health care infrastructure. There are two main categories of hospitals. One is known as General Hospital while the other as specialist Hospital/Nursing Homes. There are more than 7000 hospitals in the country and a majority of these are general hospitals and only a few specialist hospitals such as Cancer, mental, Maternity, etc. Bureau of Indian Standards has developed a series of standards on hospital planning which include:IS 12377: 1988 Classification and matrix of various categories of hospitalsIS 12433 (Part 1): 1988 Basic requirements for hospital planning: Part 1 Up to 30 bedded hospitalIS 12433 (Part 2): 2000 Basic requirements for hospital planning: Part 2 Up to 100 bedded hospitalIS 10905 (Part 1): 1984 Recommendations for basic requirements for general hospital buildings: Part 1 Administrative and hospital services department buildings.
