Cullet and batch preheating systems can theoretically be installed at any existing glass melting furnace with greater than 50% cullet in the batch. Preheating of only the batch has been problematic and is not considered as proven technology. Up until now, the integrated add-on technology of waste heat recovery through batch preheating and oxy-fuel combustion has not managed to really break through unto the market in spite of the joint benefits in emission control and operating costs. Batch preheating has not found acceptance due to long pay-back periods based on energy savings alone and the lack of long-term commercial experience. This lack of experience has prohibited the industry from evaluating potential process benefits, such as increased pull, better quality, and increased furnace life, which can greatly increase the technological financial attractiveness for conventional air-full furnaces. The idea of enhancements to this preheating technology towards a second generation of batch and cullet preheaters is presented.
