India's Jindal to be among top 5 stainless producers in the world

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL), India's largest integrated stainless steel manufacturer, recently announced its major expansion plans. JSL's greenfield expansion in Orissa is on track, and this project envisages setting up a capacity of 1.6m tonnes of stainless steel at a plant at Kalinga Na-gar Industrial Complex, Orissa. The project is fully integrated from mining to cold rolling, along with a 500 MW captive power plant. Phase I of the greenfield project is nearing completion. Phase I has a ferroalloy plant with a capacity to produce 150,000 tonnes of ferro-alloys. Production with 2 x 60 MVAferro-chrome furnaces has already stabilized. The ferro-manganese plant with a capacity of 50,000 tpy will start operation by September 2007, whereas the silico-manganese plant with a capacity of 50,000 tpy and a 250 MW power plant will start operation by October/ November, 2007. The company has already invested Rs22,500,000,000 (approx 550 million US dollars) in phase I of the project.
