Energy usage in the modern world is predominantly in the electrical form due to the advantages offered by it in ease of generation, transformation, transmission and ultimate application as compared to other forms of energy. The Indian Electricity Rules, 1956, together with the Electricity Act, 2003 lay down the specific regulations to be adhered to in the supply and use of electrical energy. There are several agencies engaged in electrical construction activity. They have varied practices in view of their diverse interests and different accessibility levels to technological developments. A need was felt to unify these practices and provide assistance on economic selection, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment employed in the usage of electrical energy. Bureau of Indian Standards Sectional Committee on electrical installations prepares standards for safety and related matters in designing, erection and maintenance of electrical installations from the point of view of safety and good engineering practice and to ensure compatibility between such standards and those concerning the equipment installed. This Committee took up the task to formulate a unified Code of Practice and to complement and elaborate on the lE Rules, 1956 for the ease of application by the system engineer. The National Electrical Code was first published in 1985.
