Over the past 15 years, East Asia's share of globalsteel consumption approximately doubled from 20％ to 40％.In 1998 it fell precipitously, possibly by as muchas40Mt,causing upheavals in global tradepatterns. On the occasion of its October 1998meeting in Taipei, the International Iron and SteelInstitute invited a panel of experts to probe intothe background and assess the consequencesof this region's financial, economic and structural problems.
