The forecast: A warm front on the way but with the occasional cold breeze

THE UK is no longer ranked as a leading producer of steel but has nonetheless maintained its position as a global centre for information on steel production, consumption, trade and raw materials. London-based Steel Business Briefing (SBB) issues daily briefings on worldwide developments, publishes weekly reports about the global, American and Chinese steel industries as well as iron ore and steel prices ('The Steel Index'), has compiled a capacity reference book, conducts executive training courses and offers research and consulting services. SBB also hosts conferences worldwide. Its Steel Markets in North America conference in Chicago on March 11-12 attracted more than 220 delegates (not including speakers, reporters, guests and SBB personnel). The majority of delegates were from the USA, with 32 visitors from abroad including the UK, China, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Turkey, South Korea and Canada. Two sessions were chaired, respectively, by Tom Danjczek of the Steel Manufacturers Association and David Phelps of the American Institute for International Steel, the other three by SBB representatives.
