Indian steel producers post healthy profits In HI of 2007-08

India's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) growth slipped to 9.2 percent in the first 6 months (H1) of FY 2007-08 from 11.1 percent in the same period of the previous year. The manufacturing sector also posted a lower growth of 9.7 percent in the same comparative period down from 12.3 percent. The capital goods sector grew by a healthy 19.6 percent (previously 17.5 percent). The consumer durables sector, however, recorded a dismal fall of -3.2 percent (vs 15.2 percent). The growth of six infrastructural industries - the core sector - amounting to 26.7 percent in the overall IIP, also declined to 6.6 percent in H1 of 2007-08 over 8.7 percent in the same period last year.
