Biomedical waste management : The challenges ahead

Hospitals generate enormous amount of waste. Each year in the USA alone, over 600, 000 tonnes of regulated medical waste are generated by hospitals and other health care institutions. In 1991 an estimated 100, 000 tonnes of waste was generated in British NHS hospitals. By the end of the decade, a 20 to 25 percent increase in medical waste volume is expected.
