STANDARDS NEWS - Regional Review Meeting of Plywood, Block Board and Related Products - Southern Region

The Thiruvananthapuram Branch Office of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized a Regional Review Meeting of licensees of Plywood, Block Board and related products in the Southern Region, on 20 March 2003 at Calicut. The meeting chaired by Shri Gulshan Rai, Deputy Director General-Southern Region, Chennai was well attended by several licensees. In his inaugural address, Shree Gulshan Rai elucidated the objectives of such review meetings and called upon the participants to express their experience in the operation of the certification scheme and offer suggestions towards betterment of the scheme. It was stated that the standards are dynamic and in addition in such forums anyone is free to express their suggestions for improvement. He admonished the participants for harbouring the wrong notion that the standards are formulated by BIS and explained that this is actually done by a committee consisting of manufacturers, users, laboratories, research organizations, people from the industry etc. He also spoke on mandatory certification, system certification, laboratories and the role of Training Institute. He advised the participants to go in for System Certification and requested them to contact the nearest Branch Office for necessary help and guidance. Concluding his address, Shri Rai stated that review meeting have been very helpful in the past and expressed hope that the participants will take active interest in the deliberations.
