BIM Sets the Bar for Sustainable Design: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges of Building Information Modeling

With BIM, designers capture and integrate 3D building-related information into interactive data to analyze costs, materials and schedules. But BIM's greatest impact is just now being realized in its ability to communicate sustainable options and impacts early in the design process, as well see in the Agua Fria Case Study. A 3D model created through BIM tools, such as Revit software, collects information needed to analyze sustainable factors. Powerful analysis engines produce meaningful results including: energy analysis, daylight-ing and lighting studies, material quantities, construction scheduling, specification management, cost-estimating and code analysis.
