Maybe you knew, maybe you didn't. On December 31, 2003, theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA), with the blessing of manufacturers of wood preservatives, quietly pulled the plug on residential use of a 60-plus year building standard: chromated copper arsenate, more commonly known as CCA. It remains in use forindustrial, marine and agricultural applications, but the days of buying a CCA-treated 2x4 are long gone.
