Las Vegas likes to think big, but many of its big building plans are being tested by fewer visitors, declining gaming revenues and tightened credit availability. As a result, several high profile projects including the 4.8 billion dollion Echelon have been delayed or cancelled. On Aug. I, Boyd Gaming Corp. halted construction on its 5,000-room Echelon mega-resort citing "weak economic conditions" and "the difficult environment in today's capital markets." The Las Vegas-based firm will delay work at least a year, placing 800 tradesmen immediately out-of-work. The move sent Boyd stock skyrocketing by 32 percent for its steepest gain since April 2000.
