Arizona is in a period of dramatic growth and this trend is expected to continue into the future, it is estimated that Arizona's population will reach 12.8 million by 2050. According to the Maricopa Association of Governments during this timeframe, 600-700 million square feet of addition al office space will be needed, Arizona will need to double power and utility substations, distribution systems and generating capacity, we'll need 2.5 mil lion more housing units, 20,000 additional K-12 classrooms, millions of square feet of college and university classrooms and research space, 500 new police and fire stations, 75-100 new hospitals and primary care facilities, 200 additional library branches and millions of square feet in governmental services facilities. These facilities and the increased population will place a tremendous amount of stress on our transportation system.
