Remembering Kit Avery

I came into the office this morning with an entirely other topic in mind for this month's Stumpin' column. In fact, I was already on plan B—plan A needed to be delayed (more on that later), but not to worry, I had an emergency backup column ready togo. I generally have a tentative plan for what will go in this magazine well in advance, but it's not too infrequently that those plans change at the last minute for various reasons. This is one of those times. I checked my email first thing and saw a message with a familiar name in the subject line: Kit Avery. The email informed me that Avery had passed away in December. The writer wondered why we hadn't printed an obituary for Avery, a long-time fixture in the logging community in parts of Alabama and Mississippi. The honest answer was that this was the first we'd heard of his death.
