Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. in 2008 with a record production of 7.84 billion dollars! This record production value largely resulted from an all-time high annual copper value of 5.9 billion dollars. In addition to leading the Nation in copper, Arizona ranks in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites,and pumice. The objective of the Department is to advocate the development of Arizona's mineral resources. This is accomplished through technical research, field investigations, compilation of information into a mineral occurrence database, and disseminating information through publications, personal contacts, and seminars. The Department's mining engineers and geologists assist mining and exploration companies, prospectors, and others interested in Arizona's mines.
