Top Contractors of the Southwest--Despite Economy, General Contractors Post Record Revenues in '08

Southwest Contractor's year-old ranking of the top general contractors in the Southwest tops 20 billion dollars in revenue for the first time. This year's charts include 140 companies who submitted their 2008 financial information. The firms collectively produced over 20.3 billion dollars in general contracting revenue. The top 125 in 2008 more than doubled the revenue reported five years ago by the same number of firms. While construction starts and new development slowed dramatically in the fourth quarter of 2008, there was still a sizable volume of residual work that helped to sustain contractors, such as the 11 billion dollars CityCenter. Not surprising, CityCenter's main contractor, Phoenix-based Perini Building Co., once again claimed the top spot of this year's ranking with 3.19 billion dollars in revenue. Also part of the CityCenter team is Las Vegas-based Tishman Construction Corp. of Nevada. The firm reported 892.4 million dollars, high enough to be ranked second.
