Survival After Concurrent Traumatic Dislocation of the Atlanto-Occipital and Atlanto-Axial Joints: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Isolated atlanto-occipital or atlantoaxial dislocation usually results in death or devastating neurologic deficit. Survival after the concurrent dislocation of both joints is extremely rare. We describe a case of concurrent dislocation of the atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial articulations in a patient who survived with a complete spinal cord injury.
