Later in life, Arthur Mall became good friends with Andreas Stihl—a relationship that worked to their mutual benefit. Mall had been born in 1895 in Hammond, Indiana, but had lived in Chicago after the age of two. As a six-year-old boy he sold newspapers on the streets of the southeast side, and after high school he attended Steven's Institute in Hoboken and Armour Institute in Chicago before graduating from the navy's officer candidate school. He served in the navy from 1916 to 1918, and within a few years was in business for himself.
